The Wilder Institute works collaboratively with many conservation partners around the world. We advance conservation science by sharing the research and tools we have developed with other practitioners. We recently developed a tool to assess the success of community conservation programs.
The Standardized Protocol for Evaluating Community Conservation Success (SPECCS) is a user-friendly tool which can be used to pinpoint the specific strengths and weaknesses of community conservation initiatives. SPECCS will help practitioners evaluate the success of their initiative, make strategic investments, and balance the dual goals of community conservation, so both people and wildlife benefit. Standardized Protocol for Evaluating Community Conservation Success (SPECCS): SPECCS evaluates community conservation projects by considering ecological, social and economic outcomes and the synergies between them. Evaluation criteria are grouped into five elements: biological benefits, biological resilience, socio-economic benefits, socio-economic resilience, and linkage mechanisms.
